Locate marks are a starting point, not a guarantee. A paint line says a utility runs somewhere in this corridor, usually within a tolerance zone of eighteen to twenty-four inches on either side. That is enough to know you should be careful. It is not enough to put a boring head or an excavator bucket in the ground with confidence.
Daylighting closes that gap. We cut a small test hole with pressurized water and vacuum out the spoil, exposing the actual pipe or conduit so you can see three things that paint cannot tell you: what the utility is, exactly where it sits, and how deep it runs.
What positive verification actually means
More utility owners and general contractors now require positive visual verification before any trenchless or mechanical work near their assets. The reasoning is simple: a documented photo of an exposed line is proof, and a paint mark is a prediction.
- Confirm the utility type before you commit a crew or a bore path.
- Verify depth so your design clears the crossing instead of assuming it does.
- Catch the mismarks and unmarked lines that records miss entirely.
Where it pays off
The math favors daylighting on almost any congested corridor. A single strike on a gas or fiber line costs far more than the potholes it would have taken to avoid it, once you count the repair, the downtime, and the paperwork. On a busy route we can expose a dozen crossings in a day, and your dig plan moves from hopeful to verified.
Water and vacuum cannot cut a line the way steel teeth can. That is the whole point of exposing it first.
